Fox to Launch Late-Night ‘Animation Domination High-Def’ Block in July

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Fox will launch Animation Domination High-Def, a late-night offshoot of its Sunday night Animation Domination comedy block, on July 27, the network said.

The block, which will feature the voice talents of Mandy Moore, Ken Marion, Patton Oswalt and others, will run from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Saturday nights.

The first season of Animation Domination High-Def will include several 15-minute animated programs, including “Axe Cop,” “High School USA” and an as-yet-untitled project from sibling comedy duo Kenny and Keith Lucas, aka The Lucas Brothers.

During a panel on the new animation block on Tuesday, Animation Domination High-Def head Nick Weidenfeld, formerly the head of development for the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, said that the block will provide a forum for “experimental and more interesting forms of animation.” He also noted that it’s possible that some of the projects could end up transitioning to the network’s primetime Animation Domination block.

However, he added, “the stuff that we’re making is not the exact same fare as a Sunday night broad comedy show… those shows need to be huge hits.”

Featuring a cast that includes Oswalt, “Breaking Bad” alum Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks, and “Community” creator Dan Harmon, “Axe Cop” is the brainchild of five-year-old Malachai Nicolle and his 30-year-old brother, Ethan Nicolle. The series will follow a superhero who lives on a steady diet of birthday cake and dispenses his own unique brand of vigilante justice. Weidenfeld and “American Dad” vet Judah Miller developed the series, with Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser of “Drawn Together” serving as executive producers and showrunners.

Meanwhile, “High School USA” revolves around a group of super-positive millennial students as they tackle modern perils such as cyber-bullying, Adderall addiction and embarrassing sexting incidents. “Community” and “TV Funhouse” veteran Dino Stamatopoulos created and is writing the show, which boasts a cast including Vincent Kartheiser of “Mad Men” and “Mandy Moore.”

The untitled Lucas Brothers project, which is based on the siblings’ stand-up comedy routine, follows the pair as they attempt to run a moving company, dubbed Va¢ation Boy$ , after inheriting an old van from their uncle.

Wall Street rises as Alcoa gives lift to earnings season

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street rose on Wednesday after Alcoa got the earnings season under way with better-than-expected revenue and an encouraging outlook for the year.

Alcoa Inc said it expects global demand for aluminum will continue to grow in 2013, though the company kept a cautious tone as worries lingered over a looming U.S. budget confrontation. Shares of Alcoa, the largest aluminum producer in the United States, rose 0.5 percent to $9.18.

Still, investors are wary about the outcome of the fourth-quarter earnings season. Profits were expected to beat the previous quarter's lackluster results, but analyst estimates were down sharply from where they were in October. Earnings were expected to grow by 2.7 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

But the lowered expectations leave room for companies to surprise investors even if their results aren't particularly strong, analysts said.

"Clearly no one is expecting a stellar earnings season. With the number of companies that lowered guidance over the last few weeks, I think there's some concern that we could see companies disappoint," said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones in St. Louis.

"However, based on the fact that many companies have lowered guidance, that means they've put the bar so low they could crawl over it, and I would expect what we'll see is some relief as earnings come in."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 67.00 points, or 0.50 percent, to 13,395.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 5.50 points, or 0.38 percent, to 1,462.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 10.07 points, or 0.33 percent, to 3,101.88.

Among other earnings, Constellation Brands , whose labels include Robert Mondavi and Ravenswood wines, rose 0.4 percent to $36.30 after it reported higher profit and raised its earnings forecast.

Apollo Group Inc slid about 10 percent after it reported lower student sign-ups for the third straight quarter and cut its operating profit outlook for 2013. Apollo's shares were last at $18.83.

Dish Network Corp late Tuesday announced a bid for Clearwire Corp that trumped Sprint Nextel Corp's $2.2 billion offer, setting the stage for a battle over the wireless service provider.

Clearwire was up 7.5 percent at $3.14, while Sprint lost 2 percent to $5.85.

Hard drive maker Seagate Technology rose 4.6 percent to $32.83 after it raised its second-quarter revenue forecast.

Peugeot hit by slump in EU sales

Peugeot Citroen saw its global sales fall sharply last year, which it blamed on “the crisis affecting the European automobile market”.

Sales worldwide were down 16.5%, the French company said.

The company’s sales in Europe were down 8.6%, with big falls in the recession-hit southern European states.

Sales in Spain were down 14.9% last year, while in Italy they dropped by 20.9%. In France, Peugeot’s sales were down by 13.3%.

Peugeot also said it had been affected by pulling out of Iran.

The company sold 2.97 million vehicles globally in 2012, down from 3.55 million in 2011.

Peugeot Citroen brands chief Frederic Saint-Geours said: “PSA Peugeot Citroen has felt the full force of the sustained decline in Europe’s automobile markets.”

However, its sales did rise in some markets. In Russia they were up by 10.1%, in China they rose 7.2%, and in Latin America they were 5.6% higher.

AP Source: Surgery reveals damage to RG3's ACL

WASHINGTON (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the surgery on Robert Griffin III's knee revealed damage to the ACL.

The Washington Redskins quarterback had surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The procedure also examined Griffin's ACL, which he tore while playing for Baylor in 2009. Another torn ACL would complicate Griffin's chances of returning by the start of next season.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Redskins had not made an announcement about the latest details surrounding the rookie quarterback's injury.

Griffin sprained the LCL last month and reinjured the knee in Sunday's playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Iran faces oil revenue problem

By John Defterios, CNN

January 8, 2013 -- Updated 1535 GMT (2335 HKT)

With elections in June, it remains unclear how energy policy will evolve after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's era

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The IEA has suggested Iraq surpassed Iran in output for the first time in over 20 years

  • The Iranian people are faced with spiralling inflation and job layoffs within the state sector

  • Iranian oil revenues in the country plummeted 40 percent, while gas export revenues fell by 45%

Editor's note: John Defterios is CNN's Emerging Markets Editor and anchor of Global Exchange, CNN's prime time business show focused on the emerging and BRIC markets. You can watch it on CNN International at 1600 GMT, Sunday to Thursday.

Abu Dhabi (CNN) -- All indications are that sanctions against Iran are really starting to bite and this time it is coming from the oil ministry in Tehran, which for months has denied that oil production was suffering due to international pressure.

In an interview with the Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA), Gholam Reza Kateb a member of the national planning and budget committee in Parliament referenced a report from Iran's oil minister Rostam Qasemi. In that report, the minister suggested that oil revenues in the country plummeted 40 percent, while gas and gas products' export revenues fell by 45% compared to the same period last year.

Read more: Official: Iran, nuclear watchdog group deal close

This is a hot button issue in Iran, where the currency due to sanctions has dropped 80 percent from its peak in 2011. The Iranian people are faced with spiralling inflation and job layoffs within the state sector.

I spoke with a source in Iran's representative office to OPEC who declined to comment and referred all matters to the Oil Ministry. A spokesman at the state oil company Iran Petroleum would only say "in this political climate it is difficult to confirm these statements."

Read more: Iran steps up uranium enrichment, U.N. report says

Hours later, a spokesman from the Ministry told another Iranian news agency, Mehr, that the numbers quoted about revenue and production drops are not true, although he offered no specific numbers.

Until this report to the Iranian Parliament, Minister Qasemi has maintained that Iran's production was hovering around four million barrels a day, where it was two years ago.

Read more: Opinion: Time to defuse Iranian nuclear issue

Back at the OPEC Seminar in June 2012, the minister told me that sanctions would not have any influence on plans to expand production and investment, shrugging off questions that suggested otherwise. This despite analysis to the contrary from the Paris based International Energy Agency and Vienna based OPEC of which Iran is a member.

The IEA back in July suggested that Iraq surpassed Iran in production for the first time in over two decades and production in Iran dipped to 2.9 million barrels a day. OPEC in its October 2012 survey said it slipped to 2.72 million at the time Minister Qasemi said output remained at 4 million barrels.

Minister Qasemi was recently quoted at a conference in Tehran that Iran needs to invest $400 billion over the next five years to maintain production targets and to play catch up after years of under investment.

Iran is a land full of potential. According to the annual BP Statistical Review, Iran sits on nearly 10 percent of the world's proven reserves at 137 billion barrels. The South Pars field which it shares with Qatar is one of the largest natural gas fields in the world -- but Iran, due to sanctions, cannot expand development.

This is a highly charged period. With elections in mid-June, it remains unclear how energy policy will evolve after the era of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad passes. It has been eight years of his tough line against Washington, Brussels and other governments that put forth sanctions against Iran. It is not clear if a new President will usher in a new nuclear development policy to ease the pressure on Iran's energy sector and the country's people.

Puppy Bowl is back – now with hedgehogs

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Are you ready for some necessary ruff-ness? Good, because Puppy Bowl IX is officially a go.

Animal Planet has confirmed that its cherished annual tradition, Puppy Bowl, is back on for another round of gridiron thrills and canine cuteness.

This year’s Puppy Bowl will take place February 3 – for those who don’t follow non-puppy sports, that’s Super Bowl Sunday – from 3 to 5 p.m., at the newly christened Geico Stadium, with 63 pooches vying for glory on the field.

The latest incarnation of the animal kingdom’s most-anticipated sporting event is receiving a few tweaks this year. In a first for the nine-year-old Puppy Bowl, the battling canines will be encouraged from the sidelines by a squadron of hedgehog cheerleaders. In another first, new Puppy Cam technology will put viewers on the field with “in-your-face” shots of snouts, tails and paws, while an off-field camera will capture substitutes warming up for the game in a special puppy hot tub. (Three words: underwater puppy shots.)

As always, the game will feature the Kitty Half-Time Show, where kittens will provide a break from the action on the field with an array of acrobatics and gymnastics, culminating in a confetti shower. (Because, really, do you expect any surprises from Beyonce’s half-time show this year?)

Wall Street dips as earnings season begins

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were little changed at the open on Tuesday as an earnings season expected to show sluggish corporate growth gets under way.

Profits in the fourth quarter are seen above the previous quarter's lackluster results, but analysts' current estimates are down sharply from where they were in October. Quarterly earnings are expected to grow by 2.8 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

If earnings growth appears to be "less bad" than expected that would translate into a near-term uptick in the market, according to Eric Wiegand, senior portfolio manager at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in New York.

"But I think there's still ample areas for concern," he said, listing policy worries in Washington and uneven economic activity as a result of Superstorm Sandy during last quarter.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 40.65 points, or 0.30 percent, to 13,343.64. The S&P 500 <.spx> lost 4.28 points, or 0.29 percent, to 1,457.61. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dropped 5.04 points, or 0.16 percent, to 3,093.78.

German data showed industrial orders fell more than forecast in November due to a sharp drop in demand from abroad, reinforcing concerns that Europe's largest economy may have contracted in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Monsanto Co shares rose 3.2 percent to $99.05 after hitting a more than four-year high at $99.99. The world's largest seed company raised its earnings outlook for fiscal 2013 and posted strong first-quarter results.

Education provider Apollo Group and Dow component Alcoa Inc , the largest U.S. aluminum producer, round out the start of earnings season after the closing bell.

Shares of restaurant-chain operator Yum Brands Inc fell 4.6 percent to $64.78 a day after the KFC parent warned sales in China, its largest market, shrank more than expected in the fourth quarter.

London-traded Vodafone shares rose almost 2 percent after its partner in U.S. joint venture Verizon Wireless said it would be "feasible" to buy out the British group. U.S.-traded Vodafone stock fell 1.5 percent.

Sears Holdings shares fell 1.4 percent to $42.31 a day after the company said its chief executive will step down for family health reasons. The U.S. retailer also reported a 1.8 percent decline in quarter-to-date sales at stores open at least a year.

GameStop shares fell 7.1 percent to $23 after it reported sales for the holiday season and cut its guidance.

Initial Drilling Results Further Demonstrate Scale of Berta Copper Anomaly in Turkey

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Jan 8, 2013) – Nuinsco Resources Limited (“Nuinsco” or “the Company”) (NWI.TO) (www.nuinsco.ca) today announced the initial results received from the diamond drilling program conducted on the Berta Project in Turkey during the autumn of 2012. The work program was operated by the Company”s joint venture partner Xstrata Copper (“Xstrata”). The Berta Project is a copper porphyry target which is reputed to be the largest copper anomaly in the Turkish Pontides metals belt – as such it is an attractive and prospective exploration target.

A total of six diamond drill holes were completed in a work program that follows-up on the widespread and very anomalous copper mineralization identified in previous work programs. The drilling targeted areas not previously drilled but which are overlain by very strong copper-in-soil anomalies located at the centre, east and north of the Berta porphyry system. Results from past drill programs conducted between 2005 and 2008 returned very positive results, including DDH SD-07-08, collared at the northeast periphery of the Berta system, which intersected 710.9m grading 0.28% copper and 0.07g/t gold between 3.80m and 714.7m (see press release dated Apr. 25, 2007) and DDH SD-08-10 (collared 500m south of SD-07-08) which returned 164.0m grading 0.20% copper and 0.06g/t gold between 250.5m and 414.5m (see press release dated Oct. 20, 2008).

Drill hole SD-12-12 of the 2012 program was drilled to a depth of 733.2m on the western side of the anomalous copper-in-soil anomaly where it intersected altered and copper-mineralized dacite throughout that included 280.8m (from 312m down-hole) grading 0.09% copper. On the central-eastern margin of the anomalous copper-in-soil anomaly, collared approximately 1.8km east of SD-12-12, DDH SD-12-13 was drilled to a depth of 926m and intersected 354.6m (starting from 571.4m down-hole) which averaged 0.14% copper.

“The most recent drilling continues to demonstrate the enormous scale of the copper anomaly at Berta,” said Nuinsco”s President Paul Jones. “DDHs SD-12-12 and SD-12-13 were collared approximately 1.8km apart and both obtained long intersections of strongly altered and copper-mineralized rock. Further, the results obtained from SD-12-13 when compared SD-07-08 and SD-08-10 suggest that the eastern part of the Berta system is more strongly copper mineralized than elsewhere.”

Results from the other four holes drilled in 2012 are pending and will be reported when available.

The Berta Property is located approximately 50 kilometres south of the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey, within the prolifically mineralized Tethyan-Eurasian Metalogenic Belt which hosts numerous ore deposits in several countries including Iran”s Sarcheshmeh Mine, one of the world”s largest copper mines at 1.2 billion tonnes grading about 1% copper. Paul Jones, President, acts as Nuinsco”s Qualified Person under National Instrument 43-101 and has reviewed and approved the technical contents of this news release.
